解説

あらすじ

明治後期の東京。長井代助は、三十歳になってもあえて定職を持たず、本を読んだり界隈を散歩したり、毎日を気ままに送る思索者である。しかし生活に困ることはない。父・得は大実業家で、兄・誠吾がその事業を継いでおり、次男の代助に多大な援助を与えていたからだ。おかげで、代助は別宅を構え、老婢と門野という書生を置いていた。父や兄は、そんな代助に、早く身を固めろと説き、しきりに縁談を持ち込んだが、その都度、何らかの理由をつけてはそれを拒んできた。そんな代助を、兄嫁の梅子や子供たちの縫と誠太郎が好ましい視線で見ていた。ある朝、代助に、親友・平岡常次郎からの便りが届いた。平岡は代助とは異なり、大学を出るとすぐに大手銀行に入社し、地方の支店に勤務していたが、部下が引き起こした問題の責任を負うことになり、辞職し東京へ戻るというのだ。平岡とは三年ぶりの再会になるが、それは、また彼の妻・三千代との再会をも意味していた。三千代は、かつて大学時代、代助が想いを寄せていた女性で、親友・菅沼の妹であった。が、平岡もまた三千代に惹かれていることを知り、自らの義侠心にのっとった友情で、三千代を平岡に嫁がせたのであった。上京した平岡は、明らかに変っていた。彼の三年間の社会人としての生活は、平岡を俗人に変貌させていた。金のために働くことには意味がないと言う代助に、それは世に出たことのない男の甘い考えにすぎないと、平岡は非難をあびせた。が、そんな代助に、平岡は自分の就職の相談を持ちかけるのだった。一方、三年ぶりに会った三千代は、生活にやつれている様子はあるものの、以前にも増してしっとりとした美しさを備え、代助の心に不安な胸騒ぎのような感情が湧くのだった。平岡のために、住居を手配し、果ては借金の口ききまで奔走する代助は、やむなく兄に頭を下げた。そんな代助を見て梅子が力を貸してくれた。用立てた金銭のことで幾度となく三千代に会ううちに、代助は、過去に自分が選択した道が誤りであったことを深く実感した。平岡に三千代を譲るべきではなかったと。そして、三千代もまたかつてより押えていた代助への愛が押えきれなくなっている自分におののきを覚えていた。一方、家の繁栄のために、長井家とゆかりの深い財産家・佐川の令嬢との縁談を望む得と誠吾は、強引に代助に見合いをさせた。音楽会、食事会と次々に見合いの席を用意し、代助も、素直にそれに臨んだ。しかし、縁談が順調に進めば進むほど、代助の中で、ある一つの決意が固まっていた。「昔の自然に今、帰るのだ」－－。三千代に自分の気持ちを打ち明ける決意をした代助は、思い出のある百合の花を飾り、三千代を家に呼び寄せた。代助の思いきった告白に、三千代は涙を流した。なぜ、もっと早くに言ってくれなかったのか。あなたは残酷な人だ、となじりながら、その中には喜びが含まれていた。「覚悟を決めます」という三千代を代助はみつめた。しかし、この二人の決意は、二人の社会からの離反を意味していた。得の家に縁談をことわりに行った代助に、三千代とのことを平岡からの手紙で知った誠吾が罵声をあびせた。ついに、得は、代助に言い切った。「出ていけ！」。今は無一文になった代助は、それからを思い、ひたすら、歩き続けるのだった。
